What is an SU NetID?

The SU NetID is one piece of the User Information required to access many services on the ESF Campus Network. An SU NetID, along with your ESF Password or SU password, is sensitive information and should be carefully guarded by each individual. It identifies you and your activities while you access systems on the ESF and SU Campus networks.

What is MY SU NetID?

For an ESF Student, the SU NetID is the same as that used at SU to access systems such as SUMail or to log into any public PC at ESF or SU. It is identified as that portion of your SU email address before the '@' sign.

If you have not activated your SU NetID, please go to this site to do so. Once your SU NetID is activated, your ESF password will automatically be created at the end of the day with a standard default password.

If you have never visited the ESF Student Services Portal (myESF) before: You should visit this Web page and log-on with your SU NetID and standard default ESF password before attempting to use any of the information systems on the ESF Campus Network.

What is my ESF Password?

A Student's ESF Password is the password that they use to gain access to the ESF Student Services Portal.  This password is not necessarily the same as your SU NetID password (used to access services at SU and ESF like email or to log into public/lab PCs at ESF), but we encourage you to set it so that it is the same. This way, you will have one username and password to access all of your information at both ESF and SU.

If you have never checked your records at the ESF Student Services Portal Web site, then your password has not yet been set and a default password has been assigned to you. Your default password is 6 digits long; the first 5 digits are the last 5 digits of your student ID number (located on your student ID card) followed by an exclamation point (!). For example, a student with ID card number 12345-6789 would have a default password of 56789!.
*The last digit on your ID card is the card number, not a part of your 9-digit student ID.

The first time you use the default password on the above Web site, you are forced to change it. The password that you set after logging-on with your default password is the one that you will use to log on to the Records System. The change takes place system-wide 10 -15 minutes after you set your password on the Student Service Portal Web site.

You essentially activate your ESF password by following the default password procedure described above.

If you have never visited the ESF Student Services Portal (myESF) before: You should visit this Web page and log-on with your SU NetID and standard default ESF password before attempting to use any of the information systems on the ESF Campus Network.

Continuing Education or non-degree Students taking classes at ESF have a password that is initially 8 digits long as in the case of degree ESF students. The first 4 digits are the last four digits of your Social Security Number (SSN). The next 2 digits are the month that you were born, and the last 2 digits are the day of the month that you were born. If a student was born on April 1 and has a SSN of 123-45-6789, then their default password is: 67890401. You can change your password on the Web page mentioned above (http://myESF.esf.edu) by logging on to the Web page and clicking the 'Change Password' link. Please allow up to 15 minutes for passwords changed on this Web page to take effect.

There are 2 ways to change your ESF password on the ESF Student Services Portal:

  1. If you already know your current ESF password: Log into the portal by entering your NetID and current ESF password. You must Log on to the system before you can click on the 'Change password' link and you may be required to confirm your personal contact information. When you click on the Change password link, you will be asked to enter and then confirm your new password choice. You must wait up to 15 minutes for the password change to be available throughout all ESF information systems.
  2. If you do NOT know your current ESF password: Go to the ESF Student Services Portal and click the 'Reset or change your password here' link. Enter your SU email address (NetID@syr.edu) and the password that you wish to use. Click the Request Password Change button. At this point, check your SU email for a message from ESF and confirm your password change by clicking the link in the body of the message. You must wait up to 15 minutes for the password change to be available throughout all ESF information systems.

Passwords must be at least 8-16 characters long (a combination of letters, number and/or symbols).

                -AND-

Passwords must contain items from at least 1 of each from the following 4 categories:

  1. Special character (e.g. #,$,%,^, etc.) Note: please do not use the @, &, /, \, or = symbols in your password.

  3. Lower-case letter (e.g. a,b,c,d, etc.)
  4. Numeric character (1,2,3,4, etc.)

You can not have a local username that matches the name of the computer. For example, if your computer name on the ESF network is Mickeymouse, you can not have a local user on that machine named Mickeymouse.
